Nneka Lucia Egbuna, professionally known as Nneka, is a Nigerian-German singer, songwriter, and actress. She was born on December 24, 1980, in Warri, Nigeria, to a Nigerian father and a German mother. However, she grew up in Nigeria with four siblings, her father and stepmother. After her birth, her mother abandoned the family and moved to Germany at the age of 18.
Nneka’s music blends elements of Afrobeat, reggae, soul, and hip-hop, and she sings in both English, pidgin English and Igbo, her native language. She has been recognized for her contributions to music and activism, including winning the MOBO Award for Best African Act in 2009.
Fun fact: Nigerian-German singer Nneka recorded the theme song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa called Viva Africa.
