Anthony Joshua, the once-undisputed king of the heavyweight division, is back in the spotlight after his impressive knockout victory over Francis Ngannou on March 8th, 2024. This win marks a significant comeback for the British boxer, who had suffered consecutive losses in 2021, raising doubts about his future in the ring.

Born Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua on 15 October 1989 in Watford, Hertfordshire. He is the son of Yeta a Nigerian woman and Robert Joshua who holds both Nigerian and Irish ancestry.

According to Naijassador, Joshua began his early years in Nigeria where he attended Mayflower School in Ikenne as a boarding student. With his parents’ divorce at age 12, Joshua went back to the UK and completed his studies at Kings Langley Secondary School.

Joshua’s career began with a bang. A decorated amateur boxer, he rose to prominence after winning a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Turning professional shortly after, he quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with, capturing the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles in 2015.

The following year, Joshua entered the big leagues, defeating Charles Martin to claim the IBF heavyweight championship. Victories over Wladimir Klitschko and Alexander Povetkin followed, solidifying his position as the unified heavyweight champion by adding the WBA (Super) and WBO titles to his collection.

However, in 2021, Joshua suffered a shocking upset against Oleksandr Usyk, relinquishing his championships. A rematch in 2022 proved unsuccessful, leading many to question his fighting spirit and tactics.

Determined to reclaim his glory, he underwent a rigorous training revamp. His recent win against Ngannou showcased a renewed focus and a powerful right hook that sent the former UFC champion sprawling in just two rounds.

In a post-fight interview obtained by Naijassador, the boxer acknowledged his period of self-doubt but credited it with fueling his growth.  He claims he “should be WBC heavyweight champion of the world” and has set his sights on Tyson Fury, the current WBC title holder.

Whether Joshua can recapture his dominant form and challenge Fury for the ultimate heavyweight crown remains to be seen. However, his recent victory against Ngannou has reignited his career and sent a clear message to the boxing world: he is back, and he is hungry for redemption. We can only wish him the best from all of us at Naijassador.
