This Nigerian artist has taken the Afrobeats scene by storm, captivating audiences with his soulful vocals, infectious melodies, and introspective lyrics. His rise to fame has been meteoric, and his music continues evolving and captivating listeners worldwide.
This article from Naijassador will dive into the humble beginnings and rise to fame of this music star, Fireboy DML.
Early Life
Fireboy DML, born Adedamola Oyinlola Adefolahan, was born on February 5, 1996, in Abeokuta, Ogun state, Nigeria. He is the first child of three boys from his parents; however, little is known about his parents or siblings. Fireboy DML, however, attributes his love for music to his parents, who often listen to various songs growing up. His mother often listened to gospel musicians, while his father played R&B and the Blues. This diversified his musical sense and made him understand music from an early age.
Education
Fireboy DML was raised in Abeokuta, Ogun state. He had his primary education but the school’s name remains unknown. Fireboy DML proceeded to Abeokuta Grammar School then went on to study at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun state
Career
Fireboy’s musical journey began in his hometown of Abeokuta, Nigeria. He started singing in the church choir at a young age and honed his songwriting skills while studying at Obafemi Awolowo University. While at the University, he went on shows. On the campus he sang on stage to the amazement of his peers. This was a time he knew he could make money singing full-time. He, therefore, took his craft seriously after graduation.
After graduating from the University, Fireboy DML relocated to Lagos from his base in Abeokuta for greener pastures. He went to Lagos, where he stayed with friends as he had no family. He began going for shows where he was allowed to sing at some, and he sometimes had to beg or pay to be allowed a few minutes to show off his talent. Sensing this wasn’t going to give him the big break he needed, he decided to write and record his songs at home. His friend had some musical instruments which he began using to develop himself.
However, his big break came in 2018 when he met Nigerian rap legend Olamide, the record label boss for YBNL Nation. Upon meeting Olamide, who fell in love with his voice and music, Fireboy DML eventually signed a record label deal with YBNL Nation.
Fireboy’s debut single, “Jealous,” was an instant hit, setting the stage for his critically acclaimed debut album, “Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps,” released in 2019. The album showcased his versatility, blending Afrobeats with elements of R&B and pop. Tracks like “King” and “Vibration” became instant fan favorites, solidifying his place as a rising star in the Afrobeats scene.
Fireboy’s success has transcended borders. He has collaborated with international artists like Ed Sheeran, Asa, and 2Baba, and his music has been featured on popular playlists and charts worldwide. His sophomore album, “Apollo,” released in 2020, further cemented his global appeal, earning him international recognition and awards.
Recalling how he met his record label boss, Fireboy DML expresses that he was over the moon. He met his boss, Olamide (Badoo), in person at a hotel in Lekki, and it was a massive moment for the singer. They exchanged a few words, and to his surprise, they began recording songs that same day. Together, they worked on his first album, which shot the singer into the limelight. He also eulogized Olamide as a great person and not just a boss; he is a great friend and mentor.
Before choosing his professional name, Fireboy DML, it was formerly simply DML, coined from his first name, Damola. He changed his mind and stopped using DML as his stage name when he looked it up online and saw that DML meant data manipulation. So, a friend called him Fireboy one day, and he decided to stick with that instead of simply using DML.
