Controversial Nollywood actor and filmmaker Yul Edochie has issued a call to the Igbo community, demanding a return to ancestral methods of selecting traditional rulers.

In a post on Instagram, Edochie criticized the growing influence of elections and government involvement in the installation of traditional leaders.

He argued that the rightful selection of monarchs must be left in the hands of the deities and the customs of the land, not determined by modern political systems.

“A traditional ruler must be selected traditionally, not by election or the government. He must be a core traditionalist,” Edochie asserted.

Lamenting the erosion of indigenous values, Yul blamed the embrace of “white man’s ways” for the rise in crime and societal breakdown across communities.

“We have embraced too many of the white man’s ways and destroyed our society with it. That’s why there’s so much crime in our communities today,” he said.

According to him, true accountability and justice can only be achieved when traditional rulers take oaths before the gods — pledging to uphold truth, unity, and peace — and face divine consequences if they betray the people.

“A traditional ruler must be selected by the deity of the land. Then he will swear before the deity… Any day he goes against the oath, the deity will strike him down,” Yul said, adding that such leaders will never support evil.
