The Rivers State House of Assembly has formally set in motion the process to remove Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh, from office.
The move was initiated on Thursday during a plenary session overseen by the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule.
At the sitting, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, presented a notice outlining allegations of gross misconduct levelled against the governor. He disclosed that the impeachment notice was endorsed by 26 lawmakers, who argued that the actions cited amounted to violations of the Nigerian Constitution.
Addressing the chamber, Speaker Amaewhule confirmed that the notice would be formally delivered to Governor Fubara within seven days, in line with legislative procedure.
In a related development, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, read a separate notice detailing allegations of gross misconduct against the deputy governor, Ngozi Oduh, signalling that both top officials are facing simultaneous impeachment processes.
The Assembly is expected to take further steps in the coming days as the political situation in the state continues to evolve.
