Social media influencer Enioluwa Adeoluwa has expressed frustration over the frequent comparisons between Nollywood actress Funke Akindele and American actress Taraji P. Henson.
The influencer shared a tweet on his X page criticizing the trend of comparing Nigerian icons to their Western counterparts, calling it unnecessary and reductive.
He emphasized that Funke Akindele is a trailblazing figure in her own right, having shattered box office records and carved out a unique legacy in the entertainment industry. According to him, she is not a version of anyone but herself.
“I really don’t like seeing comments calling Aunty Funke the ‘Nigerian version of Taraji P. Henson.’ As much as I love Taraji and admire her work, I don’t understand the constant need to compare our icons to Western figures. Funke Akindele is The Funke Akindele—an unstoppable box office record breaker. She’s not a version of anyone but herself,” he wrote.
Enioluwa’s remarks highlight a broader conversation about the need to celebrate African talent on its own merits rather than through comparisons to Western celebrities.
