Nigerian record producer and music executive Michael Collins Ajereh, popularly known as Don Jazzy, has opened up about what motivated him to pursue a career in music production.
Appearing on a recent episode of the ‘On The Grind’ podcast, the Mavin Records CEO credited his deep passion for music as the driving force behind his journey.
Don Jazzy, who is known for his multi-instrumental skills, particularly highlighted his expertise in playing the drums.
In an episode during the podcast, he shared an unusual story about his dedication to music, revealing that he can drum in nearly any situation, including while having sex.
“I just went in [to production] and never looked back. I finished playing percussion, I moved to jazz drum. From the drum set, I moved to the bass guitar. At some point, I started learning the piano,” he said.
His love for music and instruments grew when he moved to London, which further fueled his desire to become a producer.
“Originally, I liked playing drums and bass guitar. I literally drum all the time. I do it during sex. I can even drum on a woman’s buttocks if I get the inspiration for a beat at that time,” Don Jazzy added humorously.
The Mavin boss also recalled a time when he lived in the studio with fellow producers Altims and Baby Fresh for two years, immersing himself entirely in his craft.
Don Jazzy’s career as a producer took off in the UK, where he worked with JJC and the 419 Squad.
He later co-founded Mo’ Hits Records with D’banj in 2004, becoming the label’s in-house producer. Following the split of Mo’ Hits, Don Jazzy established Mavin Records in 2012, where he continues to lead as CEO and head producer.
Beyond Nigeria, his talents gained international recognition when he served as an in-house producer for Kanye West’s GOOD Music label between 2011 and 2013.
