Amidst ongoing calls for the implementation of a new minimum wage, the Federal Government has approved an increase in corps members’ monthly allowance to N77,000, according to a report gathered by Naijassador.
This was announced by the NYSC’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, in a statement on Wednesday. The pay raise aligns with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024 and was confirmed in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, signed by its Chairman, Mr Ekpo Nta, on September 25, 2024.
Previously, corps members received a monthly allowance of N33,000, which followed the 2019 upward review of the minimum wage to N30,000. The newly signed law by President Bola Tinubu, effective from July 29, 2024, now sets the national minimum wage at N70,000.
Brigadier-General Yusha’u Ahmed, the NYSC Director General, had earlier called for enhanced welfare for corps members and expressed his gratitude to the Federal Government for the approval. He noted that the increase would uplift and motivate corps members to serve the nation with renewed vigor.
In the statement, the NYSC remarked, “The Federal Government has approved the increase of corps members’ monthly allowance to N77,000, effective from July 2024. This follows the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024 and was communicated through a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, dated 25th September 2024 and signed by Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta.”
The statement referenced Brigadier General YD Ahmed’s advocacy for better welfare for corps members during a visit to the commission. The NYSC boss expressed optimism that the raise would bring relief to corps members, boost their morale, and inspire them to serve the country with greater enthusiasm.
