Former Senator Dino Melaye has been acquitted in the final legal case brought against him by the Federal Government, concluding a six-year legal battle.
The verdict, as reported by Naijassador, was delivered by Justice Sylvanus Oriji at the FCT High Court in Maitama, clearing Melaye of charges related to giving false information about an alleged 2017 assassination attempt on his life.
The former senator had been accused of falsely implicating Edward Onoja, then Chief of Staff to Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, in the plot. This case began in February 2018 and is the twelfth and final against Melaye.
After the verdict, the politician expressed gratitude and faith in divine justice on social media platform X, writing,
“Justice served after six years. Justice delayed is never justice denied. God alone be praised. SEN. DINO MELAYE 12 – FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND IGP 0.”
The legal proceedings faced delays, including the sudden death of Justice Aromeh Benson Akogu, the original judge presiding over the case, during a church service on December 31, 2017. Despite these setbacks, Melaye consistently maintained his innocence.
He has faced multiple allegations of assassination attempts in the past, including claims in 2018 and 2019 that the Kogi State police and government were plotting against him, accusations the authorities denied.
