Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding Lagos-based National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member Ushie Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye after she criticized the Tinubu-led government over the rising cost of living in Nigeria.

Raye, currently serving in Eti-Osa Local Government Area, Lagos, shared a viral video lamenting the worsening economic conditions, inflation, and general hardship faced by ordinary Nigerians. She described the state of Lagos as “smelly” and decried the unbearable cost of living. Following the video’s circulation, Raye alleged that she had received threats from NYSC authorities, raising concerns about freedom of speech and the treatment of outspoken youth in the country.

Atiku took to his X (formerly Twitter) platform to commend Raye’s courage, drawing comparisons between her and legendary Nigerian female activists such as Gambo Sawaba, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, and Margaret Ekpo. He described her as a “bold advocate” for the people, emphasizing that instead of silencing voices like hers, Nigerians should encourage and support them.

“She follows in the footsteps of formidable trailblazers… Rather than being met with hostility, Raye deserves encouragement and support,” Atiku wrote.

The Bigger Picture: Freedom of Expression in Nigeria

Raye’s case brings to light a recurring issue in Nigeria, the suppression of free speech, particularly among young voices who challenge authority. The reaction from NYSC authorities, if true, reflects an alarming trend where individuals who speak truth to power face intimidation rather than constructive dialogue.

Atiku’s public support for Raye reinforces the idea that Nigeria needs more fearless voices willing to challenge the status quo. Instead of intimidation, the government should prioritize solutions to economic hardship, because, ultimately, that is the root cause of the growing frustration among Nigerians.

Conclusion,

Nigeria has a long history of activists who fought against oppression and injustice, and the importance of dissent in a democratic society cannot be overstated. If the government truly values progress, it must embrace open criticism and address pressing economic concerns rather than attempt to silence those who speak up.
