Reality TV star Whitemoney has addressed backlash following his remarks during the recent music awards event held at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos.
While receiving the Afrobeats Single of the Year award on behalf of singer Flavour, Whitemoney stirred controversy by saying he was accepting the award
“on behalf of the Igbos.” The comment quickly drew criticism, particularly from media personality Do2dtun, who deemed the statement inappropriate for such a pan-African event.
“It didn’t need that type of narrative. It’s an award won by an African; for Afrobeat and a Nigerian,” Do2dtun posted on X.
In response, Whitemoney clarified that his comments were driven by pride and joy, celebrating an Igbo artist’s success in a genre largely dominated by Yoruba musicians. He emphasized that there was no ill intent and expressed regret if his words were misinterpreted.
He also extended an apology to Flavour, stating he was sorry if receiving the award on his behalf caused any controversy or offence.
The incident has reignited conversations about unity in Nigeria’s music scene and the need to celebrate achievements beyond tribal lines.
