In a recent development highlighting the fight against intellectual property theft in Nigeria’s vibrant film industry, six individuals have been arraigned before the Igbosere Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for allegedly pirating actress Toyin Abraham’s latest movie, “Malaika.”
The defendants, identified as Kehinde Oseni, Adekunle Segun, Adebiyi Sodiq, Oseni S. Akano, Mrs. Agboola Motunrayo, and Mrs. Adebiyi Suliat, were brought before Chief Magistrate E. O. Ogunkanmi by police lawyers from the Force Criminal Investigation Department (Force CID), Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos.
Reports gathered by Naijassador is that the prosecution which is been led by Morufu Animashaun, alleged that the six individuals conspired and carried out the illegal act in January 2024 within the Apapa area of Lagos. They are accused of unlawfully stealing and distributing “Malaika,” a film estimated to have cost over N500 million to produce, via the Internet.
Furthermore, Mrs. Agboola Saidat Suliat is accused of aiding one of the defendants, Oseni Akano, to evade arrest by communicating with him to avoid capture.
The defendants vehemently denied all charges, pleading not guilty to the accusations of conspiracy, attempt to pervert justice, and intellectual property theft.
