Aloy Ejimakor, a lawyer to Nnamdi Kanu, has said that Kanu’s continued imprisonment could affect the 2027 general elections in Nigeria’s South-East region.

Kanu is the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). He is currently serving a life sentence at the Sokoto Correctional Centre after being convicted on terrorism-related charges.

Ejimakor said many people in the South-East are still deeply concerned about Kanu’s case.

Writing on X (formerly Twitter), he explained that for many Ndigbo, Kanu’s situation remains a major issue and will continue to be important until what he called “fair justice” is achieved.

He added that the way political leaders handle Kanu’s case could influence their chances in the 2027 elections. According to him, some powerful politicians in the region may either win or lose support depending on how the matter is resolved.

Ejimakor said:

“For Ndigbo, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is the main issue and will remain so until sound justice is done.

Whether people admit it or not, his incarceration will significantly affect the general elections, especially in the South-East, where top politicians may rise or fall because of it.”
