The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Ididiong James, for allegedly assaulting his mother and being in possession of a firearm in Kano State.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the command’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Kiyawa, the suspect was arrested following a distress call received by officers attached to the Panshekara Division.
Kiyawa said the incident occurred on Sunday at about 7:30 pm when police officers responded to the call at a residence in Panshekara Quarters, Kano, where they found the suspect mercilessly beating his mother.
He stated that the suspect fled the scene on sighting the police, but his mother handed over an English Barreta pistol with eight rounds of ammunition, which she said she had discovered in her son’s bag.
According to her account, she refused to return the weapon to him, a decision that allegedly triggered the violent assault.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the suspect was later arrested and is currently in police custody.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, commended the woman for her courage in standing up to her son and preventing what could have escalated into a more serious incident.
“The actions of this mother are commendable, and we appreciate her bravery in standing up against her son’s violent behaviour,” Bakori said.
He urged parents to be vigilant and closely monitor their children’s activities, advising citizens to promptly report suspicious behaviour to the police.
The command also encouraged residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or through its emergency numbers: 08032419754, 08123821575, or 09029292926.
