Popular Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer Tems, was born Temilade Openiyi on June 11, 1995, in Lagos, Nigeria. She first gained widespread attention with her 2019 single Try Me, which became a major hit in Nigeria and beyond.
The singer also gained global recognition in 2020 when she featured on Wizkid’s song Essence and it became a worldwide hit, further boosting her international profile. Tems has received numerous accolades for her work, including a Grammy nomination. She also won the BET Award for Best International Act in 2022.
On 14 December 2020, Tems was arrested in Uganda alongside another Nigerian singer Omah Lay when they went to the country to perform. The artists were accused of violating the COVID-19 lockdown protocols. However, they were released two days later and the Ugandan government apologized for the arrest as all charges were dropped.
Fun fact: In July 2022 Nigerian singer Tems sang the cover of Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry song for the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack album.
