Veteran Nigerian musician 2Baba has weighed in on the ongoing debate comparing Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti with contemporary star Wizkid, describing such comparisons as both “ridiculous and disrespectful.”
The music icon spoke during a recent episode of the Mic On podcast, hosted by Seun Okinbaoye, where he also opened up about personal matters, including challenges in his marriage to Natasha and a viral video incident in London that led to his temporary arrest.
On the widely discussed topic of Fela versus Wizkid, a debate that has seen the involvement of Fela’s family, Seun Kuti, Yeni Kuti, Femi Kuti, Wizkid’s fans, and the broader Nigerian music community, 2Baba was clear.
While acknowledging Wizkid’s achievements, he emphasized that it is unfair to measure the contemporary superstar against the legacy of Fela Kuti, whose contribution to Nigerian music and global Afrobeat is unparalleled.
“It is ridiculous and disrespectful to compare Fela with Wizkid. Also, it is unfair to Wizkid to compare him with Fela,” he said.
