6 Habits That Kill a Relationship Every Time

Every day, it seems, we encounter another story of the latest couple in a long-term relationship that’s coming to an end.

While these breakups might be sudden and unexpected, they usually follow a specific pattern. These are six things that kill a relationship every time.

1. Thinking the relationship is a one-way street

Relationships are not just about you and your partner. If you are in a long-term relationship, then you should consider them as if they were a part of your extended family. Hence, you should try to understand your partner’s needs and love their quirks and your own. You will never be happy with someone happy with an ongoing conflict and anger between you.

2. Being disrespectful

You are not in a relationship with your maid or chauffeur, so do not treat your partner like one. Regardless of how little money they earn, you must try to value her opinion and voice. Make sure you respect the person as an individual and not just as someone who works for you.

3. Being indifferent

Both partners must show their true feelings and emotions rather than hide them. If you feel that something bothers you, express it to your partner in a non-judgmental way. It is not good to keep certain feelings bottled up inside.

4. Unrealistic expectations

Have realistic expectations of your relationship and the person beside you. Think about what works for the two of you and accept it gracefully but do not force your partner to do things they do not want to do. You will only end up hurting each other’s emotions in the long run.

5. Not listening

Listening to your partner and giving space to their opinion is essential for a relationship. Acknowledging that you are wrong is also extremely important and should be one of the first things you should strive to do when in conflict. If you do not listen, then 20 years down the line, you will begin to feel like strangers to each other.

6. Taking it for granted

It’s easy for couples in long-term relationships to take each other for granted. However, this is probably the very thing that will end up killing a relationship sooner than later. Remember the little things your partner does for you, appreciate them and cherish those moments of happiness you share.
