Nigerian music star Chike-Ezekpeazu Osebuka popularly known as Chike, has revealed why he gave N1 million gift to a critic who claimed he owed his success to the late singer Mohbad.

In August, the ‘Son of Chike’ hitmaker took to his X page to share a snippet from one of his yet-to-be-released songs.

Reacting to the tweet, the critic Daniel Omowonuola Lawal (@Hateofx) wrote: “Mohbad made you” — insinuating Chike gained fame because he collaborated with Mohbad.

Chike subtly tackled Lawal, saying he doubts the X user can be “successful on your own”.

“Your mother made you, but I hope you find somone to MAKE you coz I don’t see you doing it yourself . Jesus stays king (black love emoji),” the singer wrote.

The user fired back at Chike, arguing that Mohbad made it possible for Chike to “rake in 40 million streams” on music platforms.

Reacting, the highlife singer taunted the X user who he claimed was hungry, and mentioned sending him N1 million.

Speaking about the incident in a recent episode of the ‘Curiosity Made Me Ask‘ podcast, Chike revealed that his actions were driven by anger, not a publicity stunt.

“It was not planned. I was just angry,” he said.

Chike also opened up about the hit song ‘Egwu,’ a collaboration with Mohbad released in December 2023, three months after his colleague’s demise.

The 31-year-old said contrary to expectations, he initially hesitated to release the song. He said he had considered giving the song away for free to blogs to honour Mohbad’s legacy.

He, however, added that the decision to release ‘Egwu’ was largely driven by his management.

Chike also revealed that he has more unreleased songs with Mohbad.

“I think the music came out maybe 3 or 4 months after his passing which if I want to talk about it, I was not really on the train of putting out the music. But that one is for management, I was never on the train of putting out the music,” he said.

“My decision earlier was that I had just given it to free blogs and let them just have it so that people can hear the last work of the artiste that I know about before he passed. But there are like four songs.”
