A video of a man claiming to be Saliu Maja, the wealthy automobile businessman immortalized in Fuji star KWAM 1’s songs during the late 1980s, has gone viral, drawing sympathy from Nigerians.
In the video shared by content creator Charismatic Oba, the man was seen hawking bottled drinks in a market, recounting his fall from wealth to poverty.
He revealed that despite his earlier riches, he failed to invest wisely, ignoring advice from his father.
The man said he traveled to Canada with a friend, but their involvement in a shady business led to their deportation to Nigeria in 1996.
He also shared how he tried unsuccessfully to meet KWAM 1 during the singer’s 40th birthday celebration.
Now, he survives by selling drinks, earning roughly N5,000 daily, and lives in rented or shared accommodations as he cares for his four children.
He pleaded for help from the public and expressed his dream of returning to selling automobile parts.
