After a superb season with MLS club Seattle Sounders, 30 year old forward, Obafemi Martins has signed a new deal with the club as he extends his stay in the United States after previously appearing in major European leagues such as the La Liga, the Bundesliga, the Serie A and the English Premier League.

Martins was crucial to Seattle Sounders’ excellent season as the club bagged two titles and the striker was keen to remain with the Seattle club. Despite the terms of the deal not being disclosed, Martins is expected to become the 8th highest earner in the MLS alongside other big earners such as Thierry Henry.

Sounders have announced that they are pleased to have the striker with them going into the next season after the club confirmed the new deal.

“Oba has been an integral part of our team on and off the field and has established himself as one of the premier players in the MLS,” Sounders General Manager Adrian Hanauer announced via the club’s website.

“He was a monumental signing when he first joined us last season, and we are thrilled that he will continue his career with Sounders FC.”

Martins broke records as he scored a total of 17 goals and also recorded 13 assists as he led the line alongside US legend Clint Dempsey as the Seattle Sounders won two titles: The Supporters Shield and US Open Cup title.

Martins goals this season took his total tally in the MLS to 25 goals in 51 appearances. Martins is also the second highest goal scorer in Sounders history and is also fourth on the all-time assists list in Sounders history with 17 assists so far.

Martins, who is expected to make a return to the Super Eagles of Nigeria in light of his excellent form, announced his delight at signing the new deal as he opens yet another chapter in a career that has seen him turn out for some of Europe’s biggest clubs such as Inter Milan of Italy and Wolfsburg of Germany.

“I’m very happy to have signed a contract to be with this team and these players for multiple years,” Martins told the Seattle Sounders website.

“This season is not over yet, so I’m excited to do more and score more goals, but it’s nice to know I’ll be here going forward.”

Martins has turned out to be a success on and off the pitch for the Seattle Sounders as he has become a hit with the club’s fans who have all snapped up many Martins replica shirts.
