Dear President Trump,
It is with great joy I write to you from Nigeria, one of the countries you called a ‘shithole’. As a matter of fact, a few weeks ago, you mentioned that Nigerians never want to go back to their ‘huts’ once they set foot in America, so we were not disappointed when the ‘shithole’ news broke out.
We are not sure if you have ever been to Africa but that is immaterial right now. While we may not want to make a big deal about the ‘hut’ matter, calling us shithole is taking the insults too far.
These things we want to let you know about Nigeria should not be news but given your latest outburst, I think I should re-iterate them.
While we agree that we may not be the richest country in the world, we can let you know that we can raise our heads high any day.
I am sure you would have heard of Nelson Mandela. He remains an icon from Africa in whom we are very proud.
Also, the richest African is a Nigerian and his name is Aliko Dangote. Forbes 2017 ranks him as the 105th richest person in the world and No 1 in Africa and yes, we are proud of him.
We have eminent personalities in well-deserved positions all over the world. For example Akinwunmi Adeshina, President of the Africa Development Bank, Amina Mohammed, Deputy secretary-general of the UN, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, a board Chairperson at GAVI. There is also Kofi Annan from Ghana, a former UN Secretary-General. This is just to mention a few.
We quite agree that Nigerians migrate to the U.S but data also shows that Nigerians are the most educated immigrants in the US. That should tell you that there are more Nigerians contributing to the American economy than any other immigrant group because education does not come cheap. While Africans may not fall into your circle of friends or those billionaires who really do not know what it takes to work extremely hard for their money, we will like you to know that we are not lazy people.
Some of the people from the ‘shithole’ countries are saving lives as Doctors, Nurses, and Pharmacists in American hospitals, building roads and bridges on American soil, feeding Americans with delicious cuisines and so many other doing well in their different chosen endeavors.
There may be a few miscreants in the US just as there are a few American misfits in other parts of the world, that does not give anyone the right to address a group of people without regards.
That you called Africa a shithole is very laughable. Have you forgotten that the US has military bases in more than 10 ‘shithole’ countries in Africa?
Mr. President, the truth is that African immigrants are not America’s problem. According to the Pew Research Centre, there are about 323 million people in America while African immigrants are just about 2.1 million. That is a less than 1% of the total population and 4.8% of the total immigration population.
Rather than call us names and degrade us by way of transfer of aggression, you may do well to take a deeper look into the American situation and channel your grievances as such.
Finally, we hope to have you make a state visit into the ‘shithole’ called Africa and see how we have managed to build beautiful cities and lined our horizons with skyscrapers, built industries and also made a foray into advanced technology, all these from Cape-town to Cairo.
By the way, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Sundar Pichai of Google, both of whom run two of the largest corporations in the US, were in the ‘shithole’ last year. I bet they had fun.
We are hoping to hear from you.
