In the ever-dramatic world of the music industry, disagreements between artists and their managers or executives are not uncommon.

Recently, singer Oludipe Oluwasanmi David, popularly known as Spyro, and music executive Ubi Franklin found themselves embroiled in a public feud over an alleged unpaid $5000 performance fee.

The dispute began when Spyro released WhatsApp screenshots, calling out Ubi for failing to pay him $5000, which Ubi had claimed Davido promised after Spyro performed at a birthday party in Ghana.

According to Spyro, Ubi invited him to Ghana last year to celebrate Iyanya’s birthday. While in Ghana, Spyro said Ubi convinced him to perform at a party Davido was hosting, promising a $5000 payment from Davido himself.

However, Spyro’s account took a dramatic twist. He revealed that upon arriving at the party, the MC unexpectedly called him on stage to perform, putting him in an awkward position.

Out of respect for the dignitaries present and to avoid embarrassment, Spyro complied. But after his performance, he approached Ubi for the promised payment, only to be told to “go and meet Davido.”

Spyro alleged that, after persistent inquiries, Ubi eventually admitted that Davido was unaware of the arrangement and had made no such promise. Feeling deceived, Spyro accused Ubi of using Davido’s name to manipulate him into performing without proper consent or payment.

Ubi Franklin’s Response

In response, the talent manager shared his side of the story, claiming that he still had the $5000 but withheld it due to an unresolved business matter with Spyro. Ubi alleged that he facilitated a car purchase for Spyro last year, agreeing to a 10% commission on the deal. According to him, the singer failed to honour the agreement, despite completing the car payments. As a result, he decided to hold onto the $5000 as leverage until Spyro fulfilled his end of the bargain.

In Conclusion,

The dispute between the singer and talent manager highlights the complexities of trust and financial accountability in artist-manager relationships.

For Spyro, the experience feels like a betrayal of trust, particularly given the misuse of Davido’s name. For Ubi, it’s about enforcing agreements and securing what he believes he’s owed. This saga reveals the importance of clear communication and proper documentation in business dealings, even in the fast-paced, emotionally charged world of entertainment.
