In a country where access to proper science labs is often a luxury, John Onuigbo is changing the narrative for thousands of young Nigerian students.

The 2025 winner of The Future Awards Africa Prize for Education, Onuigbo has captured attention not just for his ingenuity but for his commitment to bridging the digital divide in education.

A tech entrepreneur at heart, John founded Foris Labs, a startup designed to give students across Nigeria access to virtual science laboratories.

Through his platform, students can perform experiments in physics, chemistry, and biology without stepping foot into a physical lab,  an innovation that has been especially transformative for rural schools that have long struggled with inadequate resources.

“I wanted to make science accessible to everyone, everywhere,” John explains. “Every child deserves the chance to experiment, learn, and explore, regardless of where they are.” His vision isn’t just digital; it’s deeply human, connecting students with curiosity and opportunity.

The impact has been massive. Hundreds of schools across Nigeria now use Foris Labs’ virtual labs, giving students practical experience that was once out of reach. Teachers have noted improved engagement, and students are increasingly confident tackling complex concepts, knowing they have tools that level the playing field.

Recognition for John’s work has come swiftly. Winning the 2025 Future Awards Africa Prize for Education was both a personal milestone and a public affirmation of his commitment to innovation in learning.

The award ceremony highlighted his dedication to ensuring that Nigeria’s next generation of scientists and innovators has the infrastructure and support they need to thrive.

But John’s journey didn’t start with awards. Like many innovators, it began with a simple idea: to solve a problem he had seen firsthand. Growing up in Nigeria, he understood the frustration of students facing limited lab access.

With a background in technology and a passion for education, he combined his skills and vision to create a solution that could reach thousands,  and counting.

John Onuigbo’s story is a testament to the power of creativity, technology, and dedication. He’s not just building a platform; he’s shaping futures, opening doors for students who might have thought science was beyond their reach.

For a country hungry for innovation and equipped minds, John is a beacon of what’s possible when talent meets purpose.

As Foris Labs continues to expand, John remains focused on one goal: transforming STEM education in Africa, one virtual experiment at a time.

And with his ingenuity and drive, there’s little doubt he will continue to inspire, uplift, and redefine the possibilities for Nigerian youth everywhere.
