Nigerian actor and podcast host, Tobi Makinde, has paid a tribute to renowned filmmaker Funke Akindele, crediting her with playing a great role in his professional growth.
In an interview with Sunday Scoop, Makinde described his experience working with Akindele on blockbuster projects like A Tribe Called Judah and Everybody Loves Jenifa as life-changing.
He praised her dedication, focus, and leadership on set, noting that her work ethic was both inspiring and transformative.
“The first time I worked with Funke, I knew I was standing on holy ground when it came to excellence. She’s not just talented, she’s intentional, focused and relentless in the best way,” he said.
“Working with her has been a masterclass, not just in acting, but in how to carry oneself as a creative. It changed how I approach everything.”
Makinde, who began acting as a child in Kamsi and Neighbours, also shared a touching encounter with a fan that reinforced the deeper impact of his craft.
He recalled a moment when a young woman tearfully expressed how his work had helped her through a difficult period.
“That interaction grounded me. It reminded me that what we do isn’t small. It can reach into someone’s darkness and bring light,” he said.
The actor has recently expanded into podcasting with The Tobi Makinde Show.
Reflecting on the transition, he highlighted the rawness and vulnerability that come with unscripted storytelling.
“In film and television, there’s a script. But with the podcast, it’s just me, my guest, and the truth,” he noted.
