Legendary Nigerian musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, popularly regarded as the principal innovator of Afrobeat, has made history as the first African artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The late artist is said to be honoured alongside Queen Latifah, rapper MC Lyte, country rocker Gram Parsons, and Cuban singer Celia Cruz.

The announcement of his induction was revealed during an airing of American Idol in the United States. Nigerian-born British singer Sade Adu will also be honoured in the performance category.

The induction ceremony will be held on 14 November at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.
