The Lagos State Government has commenced an investigation into the reported death of a Lagos socialite popularly known as “Elena,” who allegedly died after undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) cosmetic procedure at a clinic in the state.
The probe is being conducted through the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), the body responsible for monitoring, licensing and accrediting health facilities in Lagos.
Permanent Secretary of the agency, Dr. Abiola Idowu, in a statement, said the government had commenced a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Idowu said the development followed reports circulating on social media that the woman developed complications after undergoing the aesthetic procedure, which reportedly occurred either during or shortly after the surgery.
She added that although preliminary information indicated that the clinic where the procedure allegedly took place is registered with HEFAMAA, registration did not exempt any facility from regulatory scrutiny, particularly when issues involving patient safety arise.
According to her, the agency has begun a detailed review of the incident, including verification of the professional credentials of the medical personnel involved and an assessment of the level of care provided to the patient before, during and after the procedure.
Idowu stated that aesthetic and cosmetic surgical procedures in Lagos are governed by clearly defined regulatory standards covering facility infrastructure, practitioner qualifications, infection prevention protocols, patient consent procedures, anaesthetic safety and emergency response capacity.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that the deceased, identified as Elena Jessica, had undergone the cosmetic surgery in February and began experiencing severe pain and complications shortly after the procedure.
Her condition reportedly worsened despite medical intervention, with family members alleging that she suffered swelling and other serious complications linked to the fat transfer procedure.
The death has sparked widespread reactions on social media, with family members and concerned Nigerians demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Idowu urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could undermine the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
She also advised residents seeking cosmetic or aesthetic procedures to ensure such services are obtained only from accredited health facilities and qualified medical practitioners with the requisite training and competence.
Idowu added that the Lagos State Government remained committed to protecting the health and safety of residents through strengthened regulatory oversight and strict enforcement of healthcare standards across the state.
She noted that further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
